StarCraft II is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment. A sequel to the award-winning 1998 video game StarCraft and its expansion set Brood War. The original Starcraft, was particularly popular in South Korea, where they developed a competitive eSports scene, with teams, sponsors and televised broadcasts. Starcraft dominated the eSports scene for many years.

Starcraft II is split into three chapters: base game Wings of Liberty, the expansion Heart of the Swarm, and finally the stand alone expansion pack Legacy of the Void. Similar to its predecessor, the game revolves around three species: the Terrans (humans exiled from Earth, and are adaptable); the Zerg (a race of insectoid aliens assimilating other life forms) and the Protoss (a technologically advanced humanoid species with psionic/mental
abilities).

Although the game supports team based play (2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 and 4 vs 4), Starcraft 2 competitions are almost always played 1 versus 1. At the time of its release, StarCraft II became the fastest selling real-time strategy game of all time, with over three million copies sold worldwide in the first month.
